Chronology of Thaksin's Political Demise

2001

Jan 6 Thaksin wins a landslide election with his Thai Rak Thai (Thais love Thais) party with an unprecedented mandate.

2005

Feb. 6 Thaksin is reelected with very little opposition.

September 16 Sondhi Limthongkul's weekly television show is cancelled by the government saying he repeatedly made one-sided criticism of Thaksin. Sondhi responds by holding his progamme at Thammasat University, gathering supporters every week.

2006

Jan. 23 Thaksin sells his share of telecommunications company Shin Corp in a 1.9 billion dollar tax-free deal.

Feb. 4 50,000 plus pack the royal plaza as Sondhi demands Thaksin resign handing the king a petition in askance of his intervention.

Feb. 24 Thaksin disolves the house and calls for new elections on april2.

March 25 100,000 people gather to call for Thaksin to step down and pledge to boycott the vote.

April 2 Thaksin wins the election which is followed by mass protests.

April 4 Thaksin steps down.

April 25 The King asks the courts to settle the matter

May 8 The courts nullify the election amid claims of fraud.

May 23 Thaksin returns to work

June 22 The election Commission declares Thaksin's party broke the law while campaigning.

Aug. 25 Thaksin accuses a group of military officers of planting a bomb near his home.

Sept. 7 Elections are postponed as a shuffle occurs in the election commision as they fumble to replace those convicted of illegal activity in the April 2 election.

Sept. 19 Tanks roll into Bangkok announcing a coup with General Sonthi Boonyaratkalin as its leader, promising to return power to civilian hands within two weeks time. Thaksin is in New York for a meeting with the U.N.
