General Strike in France

© Anne Holmes 2010

Starting in early September the French began taking to the streets in a series of general strikes following the introduction of a new reform raising the retirement age. Tensions have risen dramatically in the last week, with well over one million people marching nation-wide. Fuel blockades at the nation’s 12 refineries have led to petrol shortages with 1/3 of all stations having already run out. Transport has been hit hard by railway worker walk-outs as well.
