I just received an eye witness report from a credible source on the ground who said last night in Mathare several people had been seriously injured with machetes, probably by Mungiki gang members who traditionally provide vigilante security services. One man lost a hand in the incidents and is in hospital now. The Mungiki are a highly organized Kikuyu gang who typically use machetes, or pangas as they are called here, as their weapon of choice. When Kibaki came to power they thought he would support him because he is also Kikuyu, but in fact he wiped out many of their leaders. Now that the Kikuyu have been targeted in post-election violence, however, it is thought that he may be supporting them as a means of protecting his people.<\/p>\n
